the Thrill of it
On the twelfth
floor of the luxury co-op building located at
East 76th Street in New York, Ana and Edward were
getting in the mood for a friends birthday party.
This became evident as blaring music of the 90's
resounded against the sliding glass doors. Since
it was turning dark, the elaborate one-bedroom
apartment overlooking 75th street was excessively
lighted.
Edward, now standing outside on the terrace in a
blue summer suit, his tie loosed, was gazing
across the street into the well-lit apartment
window while, Ana, wearing a lavish multicolored
dress, danced to the opened doors and settled
against the doorjamb.
. . . "What do you think about my new dress?"
She asked, obviously feeling the effectsof the
Moet' champagne.
. . . She spoke with a thick, Yugoslavian accent.
For an immigrant coming from royalty there, she
became quickly Americanized and learned to
express herself rather well. With her hair cut
short and bouncy, she stood at five-foot-six,
having a petite frame. She had a classical face
and an identifiable space between her front teeth.
When she smiled there was a glow in her eyes.
. . . "It's very pretty." Edward said,
as he continued to swirl the ice in his drink. He
took a quick sip and turned to observe the
lighted window once again.
. . . "Could you do me up?" She asked,
losing her balance while moving toward him,
attempting to expose the back of her dress.
"I can't reach the last snips," she
giggled.
. . . "Snaps," Edward corrected. Her
giggle was infectious as he struggled with the
uppermost snap.
. . . "What is so interesting you're staring
at?" She asked, peering over her shoulder.
. . . "Nothing." He said innocently,
"Nothing in particular."
. . . Ana didn't comment right away, but she knew
better. She had spent many hours overlooking the
building across the way, especially at the window
directly across from her. In the wee hours of the
night, while studying for her real estate
license, she would glimpse up and find the same
blond woman slinking to and fro in her evening
gown.
